Introduction: When the Heart Remembers What Matters
In ministry, our attention is constantly pulled in many directions. Emails, schedules, interpersonal tensions, and pressing needs can quietly steal our focus, often without us realizing it. Even small distractions can threaten the effectiveness of our work and the health of our hearts.
Recently, a worship song has been playing on repeat in my life. I’ve needed the truth in it again and again. It says:
“If the highest place I reach is at Your feet, then I’ve done it all.
If the best thing that I’ve seen is Your glory, then I’ve seen it all.”
Those words cut straight through the noise of ministry and life. They remind us that the greatest place a human being can ever reach is not success, recognition, or accomplishment—but the feet of God.
The other day something happened that melted my heart. My son was quietly singing around the house when he thought no one was listening:
“God, You are my everything… God, You are my everything.”
He wasn’t performing.
He wasn’t trying to impress anyone.
It was simply worship.
And it reminded me of something powerful: only intimacy with God can produce something so pure in the human heart.

The Spider on the Windshield
One day while driving, I noticed a small spider crawling inside my windshield.
At first, I tried to ignore it.
But it kept creeping closer.
My attention kept shifting:
Road… spider… road… spider.
My focus was divided.
Eventually it crawled close enough that I had to deal with it. I pressed my thumb against the glass and ended the problem.
But the lesson stayed with me.
Spiritually, the spider represents something subtle: small distractions.
They rarely start big.
They creep.

Spiritually, the spider represents something subtle: small distractions.
- worries
- irritations
- ministry frustrations
- anxieties
They rarely start big.
They creep.
Three Lessons from the Spider
1. Recognize the Creeper (Spiritual Awareness)
Distractions rarely arrive loudly.
They creep quietly into the heart.
The early church spoke about spiritual watchfulness using the word:
Nepsis (νήψις) — spiritual alertness.
Jesus said in Mark 13:33:
“Be on guard. Be alert.”
Worship helps us regain that awareness.
When we sing:
“No treasure of this life could ever satisfy…
God, You are my everything.”
We retrain our hearts to remember what truly matters.

2. Confront Distractions Decisively
Eventually I had to deal with the spider.
Ignoring it wasn’t enough.
James 4:7 says:
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Greek:
ἀντίστητε (antistēte)
Meaning:
Spiritual formation requires intentional decisions to confront the distractions that pull our attention from God.

ἀντίστητε (antistēte)
Meaning:
- stand firmly against
- actively oppose

3. Refocus on the Road
Once the spider was gone, something simple happened.
My focus returned to the road.
Hebrews 12:2 says:
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
Greek:
ἀφορῶντες (aphorōntes)
Meaning:
In other words:
Look away from distractions.
Look toward Christ.
Which is why the song declares:
“If I feel Your heart and never see Your hand…
I still have it all.”
Even when we cannot see God’s provision, His presence is enough.
My focus returned to the road.
Hebrews 12:2 says:
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus.”
Greek:
ἀφορῶντες (aphorōntes)
Meaning:
- looking away from everything else
- focusing attention fully on one object
In other words:
Look away from distractions.
Look toward Christ.
Which is why the song declares:
“If I feel Your heart and never see Your hand…
I still have it all.”
Even when we cannot see God’s provision, His presence is enough.
The Theology of “What a God” Song
The song ends with a simple declaration:
“What a God… what a God.”
Scripture leads us to the same conclusion.
Psalm 73:25
“Whom have I in heaven but You?
And earth has nothing I desire besides You.”
Romans 11:33
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!”
The greatest treasure of the Christian life is not what God gives us.
It is God Himself.
Which is why the song declares:
“If the highest place I reach is at Your feet, then I’ve done it all.”
Because the highest place a human being can reach is the presence of God.

A Moment That Stays with You
That moment with my son quietly singing in the house is something I won’t forget.
It reminds me what faith is really about.
Not performance.
Not programs.
Not ministry activity.
Just a heart that genuinely loves God.
Moments like that stay with people.
And reflections like this matter for ministry teams because they remind us that ministry is not ultimately about what we accomplish, but about who we are becoming in Christ.
Sometimes the clearest picture of that truth comes from something simple — like hearing a child sing:
“God, You are my everything.”

Reflection Questions
Awareness
What “spiders” are quietly creeping into my heart right now? What distractions are stealing my attention? Is there a conversation, habit, or attitude that needs immediate attention?
Decisive Action
What is one spiritual distraction I need to confront today? Am I intentionally re-centering my heart on God, or reacting to circumstances?
Spiritual Formation
How am I intentionally setting my mind on things above? What am I allowing into my inner life that steals joy or clarity? Where do I need to return to the simple truth:
“Oh God, You are my everything.”
“Oh God, You are my everything.”
Meditation
Ministry can fill our lives with responsibilities and noise.
But the deepest truth remains simple:
If the greatest place we reach is at the feet of Jesus…
then we have reached the greatest place possible.
And our hearts can honestly say:
“God, You are my everything.”
What a God.
But the deepest truth remains simple:
If the greatest place we reach is at the feet of Jesus…
then we have reached the greatest place possible.
And our hearts can honestly say:
“God, You are my everything.”
What a God.
Prayer
Lord,
Guard our hearts from the subtle distractions that pull our attention away from You.
Help us recognize the small things that creep into our focus and steal our devotion.
Teach us again that Your presence is our greatest treasure.
Let our lives echo the truth we sing:
“If the best thing we see is Your glory, then we have seen it all.”
You alone satisfy the human heart.
You are our everything.
Amen.
Amen.
