Being the Light of the World

Take a look at John 1:4-5

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Let’s talk about being the light of the world for a minute.

I hear that said a lot. I hear people say “oh you are such a light!” to different people for different reasons. But here in the opening paragraph of John we see what it takes to be a true light to the world.

John makes it clear that Jesus is the source of all light in the world. And we are talking light that comes from truly living.

Now you might think that truly living comes from “doing all the right things,” but that is a works based theology. Truly living means knowing what your purpose is on this earth. So what is your purpose?

Humans were created to be God’s image bearers. This means everything that God is about, we were supposed to be about. But obviously, things got messed up (that’s sin, by the way).

Darkness in this world comes from people trying to reflect themselves, and I don’t know about you, but when I try to reflect myself, all I see is selfishness, arrogance, and pride. I have to cast myself aside to reflect God. And this means more than just doing “the right things”. It means having Jesus be in your core, your purpose for being. Your life, as John puts it.

If you are discouraged right now because you don’t know what your purpose is in life, Jesus can show you the way humans were meant to live when you give your life over to him. That is the great hope that I have in Jesus.
