Striving After the Wind
The book of Ecclesiastes is a discussion about life on this earth and how it is to be lived. Solomon, the author of this book, was considered by many to be the wisest man who ever lived. Yet, in reviewing his life, we observe that he was far from perfect. He wrote the Song of Solomon early in his life, Proverbs in the prime of his life, and Ecclesiastes at the end of his life. In this book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon looks back over all that he learned and experienced in his life and concludes the majority of his pursuits were unsatisfying and meaningless. God uses Solomon to convey to us that attempting to live a life apart from God will result in a life of futility and emptiness. In this first chapter, Solomon states the futility of trying to discover satisfaction and meaning from within ourselves and the world around us.
