When my husband was a teenager and starting to get to the age where he could make decisions of his own, his father took him down to the Central Receiving Facility. Although he had not committed a crime, his father had a fellow police officer give my husband a tour of a jail cell and locked him inside. After explaining all of the unwise choices and the influences of the world that bring people to jail, he explained that this would be the last time he would open a jail cell for him.
In Galatians 3:22, Paul has just compared the law to a prison warden and babysitter (3:24). Now in chapter 4, Paul is explaining that a child under a guardian is no different from a slave. And now in 4:3, Paul is reminding them of the bondage of religion that is in direct contrast to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul’s argument as he continues through 4:7 is that Christians have already reached the age of adult sons and no longer submit to the enslaving bondage of the standards the Judaizers were attempting to impose. We are sons and heirs and free to enjoy the privileges of our spiritual inheritance in Christ by God’s grace!
As you look back over Galatians 4:1-7 this week, do you know you are no longer a slave, but a son and an heir with a spiritual inheritance?
Father, thanks for your Word and what you reveal to us about yourself through it. Thank you that our spiritual inheritance is in you.
