In the movie The Ultimate Gift, trust fund baby Jason Stevens thought when his billionaire grandfather passed away he would collect on his inheritance and go on living his life. However, at the reading of the will he would find that his grandfather Red had other plans to teach him lessons that would lead him away from a life of excess to one that gave new meaning to being an heir. In our American culture our perspective of inheritance is a prize to be won and not a gift.
In Galatians 4, Paul said we are no longer slaves to the law and that Christ coming was to “redeem those who were under the law” (4:5). This means we are the sons and daughters of God. As son and daughters we are his heirs. In Ephesians 1:3 Paul wrote that God has “blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” This includes access to the Father, the Holy Spirit, justification, forgiveness of sins, the hope and promise of eternal life, and there are many more.
In a world that counts on their future earthly inheritance, have you stopped to consider your inheritance in Christ?
Father, help us today to live as your children and heirs of the promise you gave us.
